Botanical Garden – Faminka

Wroclaw Botanical Garden was founded in 1811 in the part of Cathedral Island and part of place where were city fortifications (destroyed on the orders of Napoleon) and buried Odra River (now there is small pond).

In 1945, during the Festung Breslau siege by the Red Army Botanical Garden suffered major damage. In this time in the Garden were placed the positions of the Germans anti-aircraft artillery and the aircrafts were dropped here ammunition and food. The Garden was bombarded and because of that the buildings and plats was destroyed. There left just 50% of trees and glasshouse plants were died almost completely. Garden area had a lot tree trunks, debris, equipment and munitions of war.

In November 1948people started to remove junk and unexploded ordnance. They had to remove water from the pond to clean it up. Soldiers transported approx. 10 trucks of ammunition and military equipment.

In 1950 (two years after the start of the first clean) garden was opened for the public. It could be visited only on holidays, and since 1958. - every day in the summer. After the sad years of war interest in beautifully flowers and plants has grown. Arriving a lot of school trips, as well as researchers and groups of tourists from abroad.

Interesting: To encourage people to visit the garden after the war, the Directorate organized flower lotteries, which attracted a lot of interest. People was wanted to get some rare unusual plants. The communist authorities banned this lotteries, becouse the state had monopoly on the operation of gaming.

Currently, the area of the Garden covers 7.4 acres (0.33 ha and under glass) and its home for 7.5 thousand species of plants.
