GO WRO - Sailing on the Odra river

Wroclaw Floodway System includes the Odra River, its tributaries, water channels and structures and hydro-technical equipment for the purpose of flood control, shipping and industrial applications. It is the largest in Poland and one of Europe's largest system of waterways and hydraulic engineering constructions, located at the metropolitan area. The old town is located in a broad valley of the Odra River, where the river forms numerous branches swirling past several islands, and which open into the four tributaries medium-sized Olawa, Sleza, Bystrzyca and Widawa. The system of river channels changed in historical times due to numerous flooding and human activities. The formation of the Wroclaw Floodway was completed in the second decade of the twentieth century. In 2012 it is expected to start thorough reconstruction of an entire node.

Before World War II  in the capital of Lower Silesia ten shipping companies worked with real river fleet. Today there are three and they have one vessel. But this can change quickly. For the better. In recent days allowed to sail another piece of the river. Sailing on the Odra river is as old as the world. The proof is unearthed oak dugout , dating back to the Bronze Age.

The origins of Wroclaw white fleet dates back 1870 year. First ships sailed against the tide, beating the upper stretch of the Oder, east of the Sands bridge. Cruises to the west, down the Oder, were limited by small size mucus Sand and Mieszczańska. The resulting shipping company "Krause & Nagel" had large ships "Natalia", "Kaiser Wilhelm" "Germania" and "Oder" and several smaller ones. They were moving in the cruises of the harbor near the square and at the mouth of Polish Oława.

The biggest of the Oder ship was "Furst von Hatzfeld, Herzog zu Trachtenberg" (Prince von Hatzfeld, Lord of Żmigród) with a length of 46 meters and a width of 8 meters. He took on board up to 512 passengers. This majestic colossus reaches the largest in the this part of Europe etablissement Buergersaele Street. Rakowiecka. Because the ships not only swam, but also moored. After the cruise you had to eat, and then also fun. None of historic ship has not survived to our times. The only preserved after the war steamer from that era, completely renovated, as "Kosciuszko" has been exploited by "sailing on the river Oder" to the mid-fifties. Then he went to the metallurgical furnace. On the Odra river sail built in the 60s in the yard Gdańsk-Stogi, worn-out motor-powered ships "Dryad", "Goplana", "Nereida".

In Wroclaw, sail ships of the White Fleet, moored at several marinas. Regular passenger pleasure boating is performed by several vessels owned by private companies and takes place over short distances using Zwierzyniecka marina near the Zoo and the Bridge Zwierzyniecki and the harbor at Sand Island and the Market Hall, as well as longer distance from the marina at Zaciszu Street. Kochanowski to Rędzin and back. In addition, the Oder uses several yacht clubs today. Dikes along the Oder, usually covered with two rows of trees (often oaks) are however attractive walking and cycling routes for residents of nearby settlements.

In addition to sailing by ships in Wroclaw you can also rent canoes, motor boats or rowing. Water Equipment can be rented in Wroclaw in the Gulf of the Gondola at Haven Zwierzyniecka and the club Pegasus. The closest city center can be rented in the Gulf of the Gondola at the National Museum. Water Equipment is available upon presentation of ID card. When hiring a speedboat There are two required documents (eg. Driver's license and identity card). On Port Zwierzyniecka addition to kayak, rowing boat or speedboat, you can also rent a pedalo.
