Walking down Grójecka street we notice on the corner a stone deidacted to Ferdynand Ossendowski, who lived here once.
Ossendowski was a peculiar figure - a scientist, hunter, traveller and spy. He graduated in physics and chemistry in Petersburg, and became a terrain researcher for Russian Academy of Science. He traveled all over central and southern Asia, from Altai country and Manjuria to Sumatra.
During Soviet revolution Ossendowski actively supported royalist forces. He is famous for bringing to the west documents prooving that Lenin was a german spy. Unfortunately we will never fully know details of his spy career, as he carefuly destroyed all archives before he died.
After the revolution he run from Russia through Mongolia, China and Tibet. Chronicle of this journey is his marvelous book "Country of human, animals and gods". In this book he described a very special man - baron Ungern von Sternberg, which was belived to be a Gengis-Khan incarnation. Ossendowski was for some time his advisor and supporter in struggle against soviet revolution.
After this Ossendowski setteled in Warsaw, where he wrote a number of books. He died in 1945, right before Red Army came.
What we know most of Ossendowski is almost eighty books, mostly about his journeys - but not only. One of the most important is "Lenin" - a biographical novel. It has been a great success, but soviets were furious about image of the revolution leader Ossendowski created. Communists hated him so much, so despite his books were translated to a number of languages and sold all around the world, none of them was published in Poland under communist regime. They even exhumated the body to ensure that he is really dead...
