For older citizens of Gdynia it belongs to the landscape, for the young ones - it is an obligatory class of history.

"...the old fishermen use to call it The Eng. Tadeusz Wenda Kashubian Cross, since he began construction of the port. (construction began in 1921, cross was founded by fishermen and mayor Radtke in 1922 - note: SI according to trojmiasto.pl) Cross was originally placed on the south side of the wooden pier which was the first, temporary port. (...) Soon, however, due to new port construction (...) there was a need to transfer it to another location. This work was done by the worker and activist of Gdynia Shipyard Mr. Rataj along with his colleagues in 1932 (...) and the cross was placed on the sea shore, near to the former Fishermen Settlement (Kolonia Rybacka), so-called. Grzybki, in front of the building of the Faculty of Technology and Maritime Office Building (where employed was until his retirement Eng. T. Wenda) Washington Str. 38. In the first days of the war it was thrown down by the Germans and hewn into pieces. Immediately after the end of the war, thanks to initiative of local fishermen, the cross has been erected again in the same place, now a little rejected, and covered by cars from a nearby parking lot."
Małowski K.: Bedeker Gdyński

The cross not only commemorates the construction of a port and the local fishermen community, but also indicates a place where ninety years ago the sea used too meet the land, in short - we walk by the former beach. Another evidence of this fact is the old Washington Street name - Nabrzeżna (Coastal Street). A glance in the direction of Bulwar (Boulevard) and today's beach is enough help to imagine the former coastline. Road to Oksywie (parish church) was more than two times shorter from the present one and the beach of so-called God's Creekside ran a continuous arc from Orłowo to lofty Kępa Oksywska. In just a few years there was built an ultra-modern seaport, as for those times. In some parts it came out from the depths of the sea while in another it indent the meadows and bogs in the mouth of the Potok Chyloński (Chyloński Stream). The cross has been recorded on the list of movable monuments in 2006. Usually the objects registered on this list suffer a slow deterioration. Let's hope that this place will be different and the cross would receive more honourable nad visible surrounding. However, it's only few steps from the most representative part of the city.
Near to the cross, on the same street you can find:
  • Navy Headquaters
  • former Bureau of Construction of the Port - historic building from the 20s, the workplace of Eng. Wenda
  • Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology
  • former Fishermen Settlement - storey houses built 1927-28 for the displaced fishermen, who had to move because of the port construction

During a recent visit to downtown, near to the cross, I felt a sudden attack of thoughts about our city, its history and changes therein. Fewer and fewer are the signs of fishing and farming village, also the former economic power, built on a sandy sea shore, is a thing of the past. What will Gdynia that we know, become when the tons of glass and cement would take away from us the view of the sea, proclaiming the era of business and commercial kitsch ...? God only knows. I hope that the findig of the cache will be accompanied by similar reflections;) at the same time I encourage you to discover (for the first time or rediscover) the objects listed in the description, as well as to make a sentimental walk using the imagination by the places where not so long ago there were boats and fishing nets drying, and life was flowing slowly on its quiet run, just opposite to the rat race that we see nowadays.
