When we hear such name, we probably imagine a huge, monumental square, with elegant buildings. But this is not how Freedom Square in Warsaw look like. Most inhabitants of Warsaw probably even don’t know that we have such square. This is simply a nice, little green square, surrounded by a single-family residential houses. The square was founded, as well as the whole Włochy Garden City, in 1920s. The street that surrounds the square used to be called Orzeszkowa Street, now it is Dymna Street. By the way, there is an interesting fact about the names of the streets in New and Old Włochy districts. When those areas were included into the city of Warsaw, some of them had then the same names as some streets in “old” Warsaw. Some of those names were changed in a quite smart way - so that the new and old name were associated with each other somehow. So, Chopin Street was converted into Pianists’ Street, Miła (Nice) Street – into Sympatyczna Street (what can be translated also as Nice Street), Graniczna (Border) Street – into Krańcowa (Edge) Street, Przemysłowa (Industrial) – into Techników (Technicians’) Street, Henryk Sienkiewicz Street – into Latatnika (Lighthouse Keeper’s) Street, Mikołaj Rej Street – into Fraszki (Epigram) Street and Władysław Reymont Street into Jagna Street. But pleasent unfortunately not all names were changed in that way.
But let’s go back to the square itself – it is not a very outstanding place, we won’t find outstanding architecture here, it is simply a very nice, local place for a short walk, with a small playground and outdoor training facilities. What distinguishes the place is a small hill with a slide. What is worth mentioning, although the square is small, actually every year some new facilities appear here, in last years thanks to the participatory budget - in 2015 houses for insects were installed, in 2016 - an outdoor gym and an ice-skating ring (which was unfortunately never used and eventually liquidated) in 2017 and 2018 - new facilities of playground and in 2019 - more facilities of outdoor gym.
In summertime, during sunny days the place is much crowded, so that’s not a perfect time to visit the cache (unless we come with children – that would be a reasonable way to camouflage yourselfBut during the night, or generally in autumn or winter the square is rather deserted, so it shouldn’t be a problem to get the cache then.
