OLD CHORZOW
This cache is dedicated to the oldest part of Chorzow, the first
evidence of its existence is dated back to 1257. Chorzow celebrated
750
th anniversary last year. Chorzow (a small settlement
at the time, completely destroyed by the Tatars in 1241) belonged
to the equestrian order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem that
founded the first hospital in the area. The name of the town might
have come from there (chory = ill) but other versions exist, too.
The first mention of a church comes from 1299, the year that set
the beginning of parish in Old Chorzow. Life in this part of the
town is strongly connected to the church of St. Mary Magdalene
until today.
Visitors primarily know the city thanks to the Silesian Culture and
Recreation Park with many attractions, including zoo or swimming
pools. From the rest of the city, the oldest part of Chorzow hides
the largest cultural heritage.
The starting coordinates will bring you to a chapelle standing at
the place of altar from the previous church. Early settlement of
Chorzow originated in this area, the oldest houses are in the
western part of the square. Have a look at the saint in the
chapelle with other paintings, it might be useful to you in
completing your task.
Stage 1: At
N 50° 18.420 E 018° 58.427 you will find
a micro with the task you need to complete in order to get a double
digit number
AB. Does that sound like a difficult thing to
start with? To make it a wee bit easier for you - look for a very
little magnetic one at the heigh of 1,8m (just like the rest of
micros).
Stage 2: Next coordinates will bring you to one of the two
cemeteries, there are Soviet soldiers from WW II resting at this
one.
N 50° 18.400 E 018° 58.292 Your task is to find their
graves and count them (do not count the mass-grave monuments). If
you divide their number by 10, you'll get
CD. You can enjoy
the view of a huge industrial building on your way, it is a newly
constructed power plant that strongly contrasts to the historic
city part. The view is gorgeous, especially at night. There is also
the grave of recently tragically departed Mirek Bregula, the singer
of a well-know Silesian band Universe.
Stage 3: Second cemetery, it lies very close to the first
one and, quite oddly, you can find graves of German soldiers fallen
duright WW II.
N 50° 18.344 E 018° 58.307 Your task is once
again to search for them, you should find the grave of a known
soldier that is the nearest to the entrance gate. Write down his
date of death as
EF.GH.IJ. His name is Max Saglitz (so that
you don't search for too long) and all the German graves are next
to a fence. There are also graves of Silesian rebels (clearly
distinguished by blue crosses).
Stage 4: It should originally be at the church but we
skipped it as there is a reconstruction of the building planned
soon. You can have a look if interested by taking the first road
left on the way from the cemeteries. Otherwise continue to
N 50°
17.992 E 018° 58.229. You will pass the large blue building of
a police station which used to be the town hall of Chorzow. There
is a small chapel at the place of the coordinates, where the Polish
king Jan Sobieski rested on his way to Wien (sieged by the Turks)
in 1683. The first hospital and cemetery of Chorzow were most
likely located here. Your goal is to find another typically hidden
micro at
N 50° 18.E(H-B)(F-A) E 018° 58.(A+C)(D-H)(J+C)
which contains formula for the final coordinates. Take one piece of
paper or copy it down if there's only 1 left.
Stage 5 or a bonus one, where you do not have to go... but
if you've noticed, there is no hint in the listing. The entire hint
is exactly there, in a micro at
N 50° 17.892 E 18° 58.110 so
this stage is clearly voluntary. You can visit our cache
Kopalnia Prezydent nearby.
Stage 6:
N 50° 17.765 E 018° 57.912 You will come to
an old wooden church, one of the few still being in use. You have
officialy left the quarter of Old Chorzow but it would be a shame
not to show you this beauty. Originally, the church did not stand
here, it was moved over from a nearby village Knurow. Substract 2
from the year when the church was built, you'll get
KLMN.
FINAL: Now you can freely search for the treasure. You
should have its coordinates by now, maybe even with the hint in
your hands, it should be more than enough. Please place it back and
cover VERY WELL and watch out for muggles around.
