Opis
Established in 1820, the new Jewish cemetery is situated on about 3 hectares on Zarzecze Street. It was partially devastated by the Nazis during World War II, however, there are still about ten matzevot preserved in the necropolis. They are made of limestone and sandstone and have preserved decorative motifs and Hebrew inscriptions dating back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the cemetery area, there is still the building of the pre-burial house used nowadays as a dwelling house.
In 1981, due to the initiative of the descendants of the Augustów Jews living today in the USA, a monument was built in commemoration of the Jews from Augustów and Augustów Land who were murdered by the Germans. It is in the form of a matzeva with Polish, English and Hebrew inscriptions: “A sanctified place. Here, in this cemetery, rest thousands of Jews, residents of Augustów and Augustów Land”. Towards the end of the 1980s, the cemetery area was cleaned up thanks to the financial support of Jewish organizations. Today, students from the Augustów Sybiraków Junior Secondary School no. 2 take care of the necropolis.
