Opis
The first Jewish cemetery was established in Augustów in the 17th century. It comprised 0.1 hectares and was located on today’s Waryńskiego Street. It was used until the 1820s when it was closed due to sanitary reasons.
During World War II, the Germans devastated the cemetery and used the matzevot as the material for paving the streets.
The necropolis was degrading in the post-war years. Only towards the end of the 1980s, the cemetery area was organized and surrounded by a metal gated fence. The project was financed by the organizations whose members were descendants of the Augustów Jews.
