Beschrijving EN PL
The Citadel in Warsaw, later to became part of the Warsaw Fortress, was built by the order of tsar Nicolas I after the supression of the November uprising of 1830. Russians realised they needed a strong foothold to house thousands of troops to police the city and prevent possible unrest in the future. Except for its primary policing role it was supposed to guard the important river crossing as well as the approaches to the important road junction in Warsaw.
Systematically upgraded over the years, the Warsaw Fortress was surrounded by an inner and outer ring of forts covering all major roads leading into the city.

In 1909, due to the changes in overall strategical concept of waging future war in Europe (influenced by humiliating defeat in the war against Japan) Russian Supreme Command decided to abandon the idea of developing the expensive chain of fortresses in Poland. Furthermore, it was decided to dismantle the existing sites and to raze the already built forts.

This decision, along with the destructive influence of two world wars, not to mention an even more destructive effect of today's free-market economy, resulted in an almost complete anihilation of outer and inner line of forts surrounding the Citadel. Today only couple of them remain open for the public, some of those which had survived the test of time are left to rot and are slowly falling apart. Some were purchased by private investors and are not accessible anymore.
There's probably not much time left to see the ones which are still there. By following the multicache route you will have a chance to see some of them. Two of them are abandoned and could possibly serve as a good scenery to some sort of post-nuclear story, B grade movie style. One is kept in a good condition by the local authorities and the other, purchased by a businessman, is open for sightseeing. Point your browser here for details of an undeground tour of Fort Legionów (in English).

This cache, as well as many others from Poland, is also registered at Gpsgames.org. If you hit the cache please also consider registering your find here, too. Thank you.
