During World War II, the forest near Palmiry was a site of German secret mass murder of Polish civilians from Warsaw. Most of the victims were first arrested and tortured in the Pawiak prison in Warsaw before being transferred to the execution site. After the war, the remains of at least 2115 men and women were exhumed, but it is probable that not all bodies were found, as Germans attempted to cover their crime planting trees over the mass graves.
The cemetery is located some 5 kilometres from the village. The cache is buried in the forest behind the cemetery.
