Przez cały okres swego istnienia Bytów był miastem wielonarodowościowym – do roku 1945 mieszkali tam Kaszubi, Polacy, Niemcy, a do lat trzydziestych XX wieku również Żydzi. Na mocy traktatów kończących II wojnę światową Bytów został przyznany Polsce.
