Piła pochodzi od starej osady Rybackiej w lesie nad rzeką Gwdą. Od. 1772 niem. Schneidemühl. Piła prawa miejskie dostała w 1501 roku przez króla Zygmunta I Starego.Piła jest 11km nad ujściem Noteci.
