W czasie swojej dotychczasowej historii obiekt ten stanowił rzymski fort, zamek i twierdzę Scala, forteczne mury Republiki Weneckiej w XVI wieku; napoleońską twierdzę oraz warownię legendarnego czworokąta Habsburgów.  Budowla otoczona jest fosą zwaną Fossa Reale.2
