Beschrijving EN PL

Everyone who lives in south-western Warsaw suburbs knows WKD railway (Warsaw Commuter Railway). It is hard to imagine the communication between Warsaw and Michałowice, Komorów or Podkowa Leśna without it.

Today WKD is one main railway line from Warsaw to Grodzisk Mazowiecki with one short branch to Milanówek. But in the past there used to be much more branches - to Włochy (today the district of Warsaw) - along Popularna street, a branch inside the town of Grodzisk Mazowiecki, and the line to Milanówek used to be longer than today, it went to PKP Train Station. The ‘town’ branch in Milanówek was built just before Second World War - in 1936 and it was disassembled in 1972. But even then the line was went one stop further than today, to the station Milanówek - Graniczna. The trains ran here until 1995. The main cause of the liquidation was the idea that the trains encumbrance too much the traffic on Królewska street (a part of road number 719, the continuation of Aleje Jerozolimskie in Warsaw). So the line was shortened to the station of Milanówek - Grudów, located just before the crossing with Królewska street. Probably today no-one would think of such liquidation, the priority of public transport is today rather more important. Maybe such shorting was not very significant, the line is actually only a few hundred metres shorter. But if today the trains had went further to the centre of Milanówek, this part of line could have had a bit more passengers. Today the branch to Milanówek is not very crowded (also because PKP trains reach the centre of Warsaw much quicker).

Today, a ‘linear square’ is located in the place of former Milanówek - Graniczna station. When looking at Its shape, we can imagine how the track and the platform must have looked like. We can also find here one small relic of the railway. I managed to find on the internet the only photo of the WKD train on this station, short before its liquidation: http://www.ryflak.rail.pl/galeria/dawne/podkowa/003podkowa.html
