Modernizm w Gdyni
Walking along the Pearls of Modernism in Gdynia
Modernism is an architectonic style invented in France at the begginig of 20th century. Rapidly spread all around the world as an international style, finding friendly "havens" in a lot of dynamically developing cities in Europe and World in a variety of regional variants. For the global architekture it meant a coming of a new epoch, influenting on her in an exorbitant way. It was a trend, which influented significantly in creating doctrines and ideas of planning municipal space and designing its architecture. Modernism also meant a beggining of great times for industrial design.
There was a minority of cities which managed to build in an avant-garde of modernism whole centres and key public buildings, as it took place e. g. in coming into being Gdynia, Tel Aviv or Brasília.
Gdynia has its own arcitectonic style and is an alive museum of outstanding architecture of an interwar peroid and the only in Europe cluster of houses - ships inspired by romanticism of the sea. Windows of gdynian tenements, with a well glazed ground floor darker than the rest, bring to mind ship's bull-eyes; balconies are rounded like seawaves, and receded last storeys are reminding "bridges".Functional psychologicly, but streamlined forms, inspired by a construction of great transatlantics, excellently signed into sightview of a hilly Gdynia and a magic aura of the sea. During coming into being a bold vision of Polish
"Window to the World", a bearing near the Port city, allowed architects to be able to show off. In a short time there grown a large number of tenements and public utility buildings, i. a. pearl of gdynian modernism as: office building of ZUS, BGK housing complex, Municipal Market Halls, or an edifice of Main Post Office. 13 years was enough to turn a small fishing village into the city of more than one hundred tousand citizens. her unique urban arrangement has been entered in the list of mnuments, despite the fact that all of these objects has averagely 70 years! This makes them the youngest in Poland.Just before breaking out the Second World War, center of Gdynia had been really impressive for visitors: wide arteries, elegant teements, chic shops... Gdynian Downtown had been a synonym of novelity, which grown qua the one in our continent in an open field in at least american pace.
Despite the cohesive "city", gdynian modernism was able to be seen in other parts of rapidly developing town. Grain elevator (also a monument) Is an example of functionalism with cubistic forms. In great numbers, modernism "domesticate" in Kamienna Góra and partly in Chylonia.Today we can surely say, that gdynian modernism expiriences its second youth. In prevalent deliberation for many years of both occupations, the knowledge of this unique pre-war arrangement has been lost. Even these days not every inhabitant realizes that the centre of Gdynia is not only the most popular shopping arcade by the coast. This consciousness is changing thankfully to a city politics. New funds offer general renovation of historical (yet) built-up area of the Downtown. City at the beggining of 21st century also started caring of appropriate publicity of its monuments. An example can be creating a Municipal Trail of Gdynian Modernism and significantly better availability of city guides. Nearby the point, indicated by coordinates is located a rental tenement
