Charakterystycznym elementem środowiska w rozwoju każdej rzeki są pozostałości po jej dawnym korycie, czyli tzw. starorzecza. Powstają one w sposób naturalny, jak i dzięki regulacjom prowadzonym na rzekach. Warunki powstania starorzeczy są ściśle powiązane z procesami erozji.
