STAIRS OF FRANZ PABEL

Góry Stołowe (the Table Mountains) - a land born of the sea, millions of years ago ... is one of the most beautiful and attractive mountain ranges in Poland, a unique place due to its terrain, beautiful rock formations, unique “rock cities”, labyrinths and peculiar forms called rock fungi. Outstanding natural and landscape values are reasons that the National Park of the Table Mountains has been established here in 1993.

Szczeliniec Wielki is a natural and tourist phenomenon. Visible from afar, a powerful platform of the mountain ridge, it charms with a “rocky city”, a historic mountain shelter, but above all with fantastic rock formations and panoramas. From Szczeliniec there are unforgettable views of the mountains and valleys of the Sudetes, around the world. This is a unique place - visit, enjoy the mountains, collect caches; but do not destroy, do not litter - let's preserve this beauty for the next generations.

Over 200 years ago, Szczeliniec Wielki (Heuscheuer) was an unconquered mountain on a rather restless borderland and there were plans to build a Prussian fortress here. Such a decision, however, exceeded the competence of the Prussian officer burdened with this task, and his local young assistant Franz Pabel.

Franz was born on November 17, 1773, at the foot of Szczeliniec in a village called Carlsberg, now Karłów. It was a small place with a forester's lodge and twelve plots, located here by the Emperor Charles VI only 40 years earlier. Little Franz worked on a farm, but he was very keen on sneaking around nearby inaccessible rock labyrinths. This was noticed by a major of the Prussian army, Bonaventura von Rauch, who appointed the youth as his guide despite his young age. Soon they were joined by a young lieutenant Gustav von Rauch, Bonaventura’s son. Together, they penetrated the massif of Szczeliniec to prepare it for the visit of the Prussian king Frederick William II with two princesses and a large retinue, which reaches August 10, 1790. Although the king did not make a decision about the military destiny of Szczeliniec, the young princesses were probably charmed by the romantic qualities of the rocks and the surrounding landscape.

From then on starts the history of Szczeliniec as a tourist destination and the career of Franz Pabel as a tourist guide. He was only 17 at that time but he had already gained fame as an expert on the rocky labyrinths. Since 1804 entry fees are introduced an the amount of visitors grows to several thousand a year. Over time, the fee increased slightly, and the funds were used to finance the construction of 665 stone stairs to facilitate access to the summit from Carlsberg (Karłów). Franz himself climbs the stairs with tourists 3 or even 4 times a day.

The next royal visit of Frederick William III in 1813 means additional honors for Franz Pabel. He is appointed the first official certified mountain guide not only in Prussia but also in Europe. In addition, he also receives the official title of the cashier of Szczeliniec.

Not only did he the construct the stone stairs but also gave names to most of the rocks, built a summer hut on Szczeliniec (1815), wrote a tourist guide (1843) and built "The Swiss Lodge" – a tourist lodge which exists to this day.

He was an active tourist guide to the last years of his life and despite his advanced age he went with tourists to Szczeliniec several times a day in the summer season. He died on June 2, 1861 at the age of 88. His descendants tried to uphold the traditions of the guide trade as a family business, but they could not live up to their father's legend.
