PLACE
Niepodległości Square - Square in Krakow in Podgórze, the current District XIII. Limited in the north street Kalwaryjska and south street Zamoyski and hill Krzemionki foothills.
In this place there were barracks c. And k. The Austro-Hungarian army. October 31, 1918, soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Polish Antoni Stawarz Austrian soldiers began disarming. This was probably one of the first sections of the free Polish.
Barracks at this place was built by the Austrians in the nineteenth century. They survived until 1945, when they were burned. Square, as such, did not yet exist - only ran next to the barracks Pilsudski Legions street, connecting street. Zamoyski of the street. Kalwaryjska and bridge Pilsudski. Today, it is the eastern part of the square.
Built on the site of the barracks hall and swimming pool Sports Club Korona Krakow (currently the western frontage) and yet unnamed square was named in 1965 Silesian Insurgents Square. In 1991 it was given its present name in commemoration taking place at this point in 1918 events.
