Description
The steal bridge on Vistula river is a part of the Kraków Industrial Heritage Route. It connects two districts of Kraków: Śródmieście and Podgórze. Originally Podgórze was a separate town that was incorporated to Kraków in 1915. Growing Kraków required the bridge to connect the new areas. The early plans of building the bridge had to be put off because of the WWI. The bridge was finally opened in 1933.
Before the WWII fees were charged for using the bridge: 5 groszes for people and animals, 10 for carts and 20 for cars.
It was blown up during the WWII and opened again in 1948. Then it was renamed to The Kościuszko Bridge. The original name was restored in 1990. There are car, tram and pedestrians routes on the bridge.
This is the oldest complete bridge in Kraków that serves until today (although The Powstańców Śląskich Bridge was built earlier not much left from its original construction). The Piłsudski Bridge is 147,5 m long, 18,5 m wide and weights approximately 1200 tons. The bridge connects Krakowska Street and Legionów Piłsudskiego Street.
