Beschrijving EN PL
The Jews had been living in Ożarów at least from the 16th
century. That’s when the cemetery had been probably created.
At
the end of the 18th century the Jews were already 70% of the
population of the city. In 1941 Germans formed ghetto in
Ożarów
and moved there also the Jews from Vienna. A year later, the
ghetto
was liquidated. All the Jews were deported to the Treblinka
concentration camp in one day.

The cemetery has many skillfully made gravestones. You can
also
find the ruins of preburial house and ohel (the funeral
chapel).
According to tradition, the tombs are carved with symbols
indicating an occupation of every person. For example, a
pitcher
decorates the graves of the people from the Levites tribe.
They
served as the assistants during the prayers. Bookcase means
that
the deceased was a scholar in the Torah and the Talmud.

More about the cemetery in Ożarów:

A charming street leads from the city to the cemetery. It still
has
something from the atmosphere of old Jewish Ożarów. There is
also
a lot of typical small houses in the city. They surely
remember
these old days. Ożarów has even a synagogue (Jana
Kochanowskiego
st. 2), but its present appearance doesn’t have a lot of
common
with the original.

Men should wear a hat. Box has a regular service but not very
often, so please report any damages and mask the cache
carefully.
Our cache is certainly better than our English.

No digging please.
